The “ROR” Heard ‘Round the World
I feel like I’ve been slacking off when I don’t get an entry in regarding what’s been going on. The problem is I’ve been so busy that slacking off is not in the cards at this stage. That combined with a nasty little cold bug made the world of voice over recording more challenging than, well, getting this entry together!Nobody likes getting a cold. For one thing, it affects the way you sound when you speak. I speak for a living. Cold bad. For instance, the following narrative piece that starts “In the garden of Eden” would end up sounding more like “Enn da barden de Beden (sniff)”. No amount of knob turning, post production or EQ can help that situation!
I found myself pounding back the decongestants before going into the booth for my recording sessions. It did the trick. The cold really wiped me out though. I was exhausted every day. Then it dawned on me the ‘NT’ on the decongestant box meant ‘night time’.
Enough of my sniveling.
The past three weeks had me voicing some pretty diverse projects. There were new clients and repeat clients. My end result is to always make sure they are satisfied and happy clients.
I finally secured a client I had been courting for a year. The production had me recording a 20 minute medical voice over for an innovative new medical device. Hot on the heels of that project a new client came knocking for me to voice a project for a new digital surgical scope. I enjoy doing medical and dental voice over work. I figure if I can swing some barter I could get some quality drugs out of the deal.
Moving on from medical voiceovers to real estate voiceovers, I conducted some virtual real estate tours. One session was for a steady client from Georgia in which I describe stately mansions that go for seven figures! I tried not to sound stuffed up...if you know what I mean. The other session was for new client Crowne Plaza Hotels. Nice hotels. Nice staff. Nice food. Nice elevators.
(Ed note: shameless plug in an attempt at free travel accommodation)
(Ed note from previous paragraph: decongestant drugs!! What did you think I meant?)
I also secured a new American classic rock radio station to do their voice imaging. I like to rock! One of my favourite classic rock bands would have to be the Allman Brothers. Still touring these days.
Rounding out the voice over studio schedule over the past three weeks there was the standard list of television voiceovers, voice mail recordings, voiceover auditions, voice over quotes, radio commercials, voicing e-learning modules. Through it all my voice held out!
It’s been quite the month of May. My cold hung on for 10 days. That’s longer than Cher was married to Greg Allman! There was definitely more than decongestants going on there.
(P.S. I have a new respect and empathy for people with allergies)
(P.P.S. Lord, I was born a ramblin' man!)
