Voice over talent for documentaries
McLuhan said “The medium is the message.”
When the medium is television, and the vehicle is
a documentary, creating the message demands
a very special skill set of the voice over actor.

A challenge to the voiceover actor
In many documentary fields, such as history or science, presentations with back-to-back film are rare. There were no handi-cams to catch the dinosaurs on Earth, watch Nero taking fiddle lessons, or look over DaVinci ’s shoulder. Therefore, film content can be sparse; and the interpretive and storytelling skills of the voice over actor are essential to success.
When graphical content is mainly comprised of still images from photographs, paintings, diagrams, documents and such, the voice over actor must work with the on-screen material to create and sustain the pace and tone; and inject the emotions that keep the viewer closely involved and interested.

"We produced a documentary called 'Righteous Humour'
which focused on the role humour plays in religion. The documentary was broadcast
across Canada on VisionTV and was considered a tremendous success. It is currently
being distributed into schools across Canada and the United States. We believe
one of the key factors in making the documentary a success was having Rory
O'Shea providing the narration. Rory was a consummate professional, on time,
and on budget. We expect to be featuring Mr. O'Shea's talents in another documentary
in the very near future."
